Seven Sisters Dreaming Story:  The Seven Sisters is a popular Aboriginal Dreaming story based on a constellation known to other cultures as well, like Matariki for Maori, Subaru in Japan, Pleiades to the Greeks and Madoo'asinug is the constellation of the seven sweating stones or "seven sisters" for Anishnawbe. The story tells of seven young girls who wanted to prove they were just as worthy as the young men, and requested an initiation by the elders.  The elders agreed, and tested them physically and mentally with both hunger and pain.  The young women showed courage, endurance, strength and discipline, and the tribe held a celebration in their honor.  They were taken up into the night sky as the Seven Sisters constellation, always reminding women that they can shine even in darkness and times of challenge.  This story reminds us that having a group of women who support and encourage, can help to persevere during times of stress. Thank goodness for the sisterhood.

Elk Medicine:

"Elk stresses friendship and co-operation - the sense of unity that comes from belonging to a group or community. It emphasizes the need to establish relationships. If you are engaged in some kind of competitive activity, whether in your working life or in a personal relationship, you may feel threatened and under pressure. You need some equilibrium. Elk shows the value of friendships and of sharing your interests and experiences with others.
Elk stresses the importance of finding time for refreshment and reflection, and of renewing one's strength. Elk has to do with stamina and the need to go to those of the same gender for support, bonding and renewal.

Persistence brings rewards. Support your health and stamina. Honor your ability to endure."

Cultural Safety:

Robyn Williams defines cultural safety as:

'an environment that is spiritually, socially and
emotionally safe, as well as physically safe for
people; where there is no assault challenge or
denial of their identity, of who they are and what
they need. It is about shared respect, shared
meaning, shared knowledge and experience of
learning together.'
(1999, p. 213)
